17-year old Utah boy injured by uncle while hunting

A 17-year old boy was hunting deer with his father and uncle near Logan, Utah.  The uncle unintentionally discharged his muzzle loader, and the boy was injured by debris and shrapnel.

No charges.

The boy had been hunting for deer with muzzle loaders in the Boulder Mountain area of Logan Canyon with his father and uncle, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office. 

While driving in the canyon, the group spotted several deer. The 17-year-old and his uncle jumped out of the truck and put primers on their guns, police said. 

As the deer ran off down a ravine, the teen walked about 10 feet ahead of his uncle. 

The uncle had cocked his gun but decided not to shoot, police said. The gun then accidentally fired, and the bullet hit the ground in front of the teen, police said. 

Bullet fragments and rocks hit the 17-year-old's right foot, calf, thigh and hand, police said. The teen was taken to Logan Regional Hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening. 

The Cache County Sheriff's Office has deemed the shooting accidental. No criminal charges will be pursued.

Two Missouri 5th graders bring gun to school

A 5th-grade boy brought an unloaded gun to his Florissant, Missouri, elementary school, in his backpack.  Another boy then tried to hide it in a classroom.  A fifth-grade girl saw the incident and reported it to police.

A Keeven school resource officer was notified and the two students were taken into custody. School officials called police. School officials say the gun was never used in a threatening manner.  

"Obviously bringing a gun to school is a serious offense, and we can't say specifically what will happen to the students because of privacy laws," Diana Gulotta is Assistant Superintendent for Communications said. "However what we can say is the behaviorguide would stipulate at minimum 10 days out-of-school suspension, to a disciplinary hearing. And then at the discipline hearing they would decide. But the most severe consequence is expulsion."  

Gulotta said school district officials do not know what the student intended.

14-year old Illinois girl dies when unintentionally shot by relative

A 14-year old girl in Freeman Spur, Illinois, was unintentionally shot by a relative, and died.

The victim was taken to Herrin Hospital where she later died. 

The Williamson County Coroner's Office responded to the hospital to assist the sheriff's office with the investigation. 

According to the sheriff's office, a preliminary investigation reveals that the 14-year-old was accidentally shot by a family member. However, they say the investigation has not concluded.

15-year old Orlando girl still in coma after hit by stray bullet in head

Danielle Sampson, age 15

15-year old Danielle Sampson was returning home from church in July when shots rang out, aimed at a car nearby.  One of those shots hit Danielle in the head.

Danielle has been in a coma ever since, and her family can no longer afford to keep her in the hospital.  She is now returning home.  She has to be turned every 15 minutes or will get bed sores. 

One of the shooters, 19-year old Tyrone Mosby, has been arrested for the shooting.

The family of an Orange County teenager who was shot in the head called for more arrests in the case Tuesday. 

Danielle Sampson, 15, was hospitalized in July and remains in a coma at Arnold Palmer Hospital.  Orange County investigators have said the teen was shot on her way home from church when a gunman opened fire on another car that Sampson was not riding in. 

The Caribbean Passport News Magazine, Greater Orlando CARES and other community leaders plan to join Sampson's family Tuesday to hold an event  called "Wake Up Everybody" in the teen's honor. 

The family says while 19-year-old Tyrone Mosby has been arrested, others involved in the shooting are still on the loose.

Bullets don't know when to stop.

9-year Alaska old boy shot and killed by 9-year old friend with high-powered pellet gun

A 9-year old boy was shot and killed by his 9-year old friend, in Pilot Station, Alaska, using a high-powered .17-caliber pellet rifle.

On Friday a Pilot Station youth was fatally shot by another youth. According to troopers at about 2 p.m. on Sept. 28 a 9-year-old boy shot another 9-year-old boy in the chest with a high powered .17 caliber pellet rifle. The air rifle had been fired by another 9-year-old boy while the two boys were having an argument. The injured boy was taken to the Pilot Station Health Clinic where CPR was performed, but the boy succumbed to the injuries. Troopers are investigating.

Pellet guns aren't toys.

8-year old Nashville boy struck by bullet while sleeping in his home

An 8-year old boy was struck and wounded in his hip by a bullet while he slept in his bed, at home in Nashville, Tennessee.  The shots were intentionally fired at the home from outside.  Motive is unclear.

"I think it's very sad that you can't even live in your own home without stuff like this happening, especially for young children," said neighbor Chetika Sales. 

The boy's mother was one of the first residents to move into the area in recent years, which is composed of many homes built by Habitat for Humanity to assist families with lower incomes. 

Danny Herron, president of the Nashville area Habitat for Humanity, visited the boy and his mother at the hospital on Wednesday. 

"It will not require surgery. He will have some therapy and will be fine," Herron said.
Herron said the Habitat bylaws are rigorous, and new homeowners must first go through criminal background checks and lessons on personal finance. 

Herron believes the shooting Tuesday was random. Police said two men shot intentionally at the home. 

Around 10 p.m., a large rock was thrown at the house. The boy's brother and mother, who were inside the home at the time, went to the door to see who threw the object. That's when the shots were fired, striking the sleeping child. 

No arrests have been made, and detectives are working to identify the persons responsible for the gunfire and the reason the home was targeted.

16-year old Kentucky boy unintentionally shoots and wounds himself and woman

A 16-year old boy in Douglass Park, Kentucky, had a loaded .38-caliber revolver on his lap when he unintentionally discharged it, injuring himself and a woman sitting next to him.

No charges were filed.

A woman, 20, and a 16-year-old boy were each shot in the leg about 6 p.m., Lexington police Lt. Dean Marcum said. Both were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. 

Lexington police initially had said they were looking for a suspect in the shooting. But Marcum said later that the teen admitted to police that he had been playing with a .38-caliber revolver and accidentally shot himself and the woman in the leg. 

"It grazed his leg and then hit her in the leg," Marcum said. "He probably had it in his lap, and she's sitting next to him. It hit the top part of his leg and then hits her. I can see it easily happening." 

The shooting happened in the parking lot near a building where community meetings are often held. 

Marcum said no charges will brought against the teen because the shooting was an accident.
