11 year old Oklahoma boy shoots grandmother

An 11 year old boy shot his own grandmother in a Tulsa, Oklahoma apartment:

An 11-year-old has been arrested in a shooting at a south Tulsa apartment complex near 79th Street and South Sheridan Avenue.

Police say a 50-year-old woman was shot in the back of the head around 4 p.m. Monday at Ridgemont Apartments.

Detectives told 2NEWS the woman's 11-year-old grandson was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Police say after the shooting, he ran out of the apartment while his grandmother was still conscious but in need of help. The victim called 911.

After questioning the boy, police arrested him on a complaint of shooting with intent to kill.

In what may have been a gang-related shooting, a masked gunman opened fire at a McDonald's
parking lot in the Roger's Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.

When the shooting had ended, a 17-year old boy, Markeyo Carr, was shot in the head an killed, a 15-year old girl was shot several times and wounded, and two 18-year old young men were wounded, one in the arm and one in the lower back.

The shooter got away.

A short time after dozens of witnesses reported hearing at least six gunshots, the teen lay dead, a sheet covering his body as his mother moaned in grief outside yellow police tape in the 6700 block of North Clark. 

Markeyo Carr, of the 6500 block of North Ashland, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. 

The victims had been in a verbal altercation with another group of people shortly before the masked gunman approached around 3:40 p.m., said Chicago Police Officer Veejay Zala, citing preliminary information. Then the shooter ran off, Zala said. 

A girl, who police said was about 15, was shot several times, and an 18-year-old man, who was shot in the lower back, were taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston. Another 18-year-old man, who was shot in the arm, was treated at Weiss Memorial Hospital. 

“Two of the male victims have documented gang affiliations,” Zala said. 

Juanita Carr-Clay said her nephew, Markeyo, loved to rap. 

“He made little videos at home on his own,” she said. “He was very talented. He rapped about everyday life, reality.” 

She said Markeyo, who attended a nearby high school, had just come from his mother’s house around the corner. “She’d given him a few dollars to get something to eat.” 

Faye McCoy, a retired nurse, was in a storefront across the street when she heard the gunshots. The gunfire ceased, and while rushing to see if she could help, McCoy walked right past the masked gunman. “I didn’t see his face,” she said. 

McCoy, who has lived in the area for more than 13 years, broke down when she saw the slain teen with a bullet wound in the side of his head. “I recognized his face,” said McCoy, who knew Markeyo from working with local youth groups to prevent violence. 

“There was no help for him, he was shot in the temple it looked like, he took his last breath with me standing there . . . Blood was everywhere.” 

McCoy said she didn’t think Markeyo was in a gang, and she lamented the needless death. 

“I have great-grandkids, and it would hurt my heart to see one of them laying out here like that.”

16-year old Florida boy shot in a park

A 16-year old boy was shot in the foot at a St. Petersberg, Florida, park.

St. Petersburg Police are responding to a report of a person shot at Lake Vista Park, which is located at 62nd Avenue South and 16th Street. 

A 16-year-old male was shot in the foot while in the park. He has been transported to the hospital for treatment, according to police. 

The teen told detectives that he was shot by a juvenile wearing a denim jacket, jeans and brown boots. 

Lakewood High School, which is nearby, was put on lockdown for a short time. The lockdown has been lifted.

12-year old brings family shotgun to New Mexico school and wounds two students

12-year old Mason Campbell was able to get his family's .20-gauge shotgun and ammo and brought them to his school, Berrendo Middle School, hidden in a band instrument case, in Roswell, New Mexico.  He is a 7th-grader at the school.

Campbell entered the school gym, where a large number of students were gathered before school started, and opened fire.

He shot an 11-year old boy twice in the face, and shot a 13-year old girl, Kendal Sanders, in the right shoulder.  Both are now in the hospital.  The girl is in satisfactory condition, while the boy has had two surgeries and is in critical condition.  The 11-year old believes he was the intended target.

A social studies teacher, John Masterson, was able to talk the boy into surrendering the weapon.

The school had a security guard, but the guard wasn't near the situation as it unfolded.

The entire shooting lasted about 10 seconds.

The shooter, Mason Campbell, is apparently a hunter (see image) and is therefore, presumably, familiar with gun and gun safety.

The gun reportedly came from the family home.  How had it been stored?

16-year old Tennessee boy shoots 17-year old boy at school

A 16-year old boy and a 17-year old boy had been fighting over a girl, at Liberty Technology Magnet High School in Jackson, Tennessee.  After school, the 17-year old approached the 16-year old.

That's when the younger boy pulled out a handgun and shot the 17-year old in the thigh.  The shooter fled, but was later caught.

The shooting happened on school property, just outside the school doors.

Police said on Friday that investigators have learned the 16-year-old suspect and 17-year-old shooting victim had been in a previous disagreement concerning a female Liberty student. When school was dismissed Thursday afternoon, the 17-year-old approached the 16-year-old outside the building, police said.There was an altercation, and the 16-year-old shot the 17-year-old once in the thigh with a handgun, investigators said.

The 17-year-old did not have a gun.

“The 17-year-old approached the shooter,” Jackson police Capt. Tyreece Miller said. “If (the victim) had not approached (the shooter) we don’t think he would have shot him.”

The 16-year-old is charged with aggravated assault, carrying a weapon on school property, alteration of an item with permanent distinguishing numbers because the serial numbers had been altered on the handgun, and tampering with evidence.

The shooting victim remained in the hospital Friday in stable condition, police said.

The 16-year-old is charged with assault because authorities do not believe he intended to kill the victim, Miller said.

The gun's serial number had been filed off.  Where did the boy get his gun?

Teen boy and girl injured in "hail of gunfire" in California

A 16-year old girl and a 17-year old boy were walking together down a very dark street in a neighborhood of San Bernardino, California, when they were fired upon, most likely by multiple shooters.  Both teens were injured, one in the leg and the other in the arm, though luckily not life-threatening.

The shooters had at least one .40-caliber handgun.  They have yet to be identified or captured.

The neighborhood has had a lot of crime lately, including shootings.

Neighbors said Sunday they heard between 15 and 20 gunshots in rapid succession out of the darkness on the sidewalk across from their homes. 

“These were just kids. They weren’t gang members. ... The girl couldn’t have weighed more than 80 pounds,” said one neighbor, who declined to be identified. 

The teens were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. No further information about their condition was available Sunday. 

Out of fear of retaliation, not one neighbor felt comfortable disclosing their name. 

There are no city street lights in this stretch of North Mountain Avenue, immediately north of Lynnwood Avenue and west of Del Rosa. Houses occupy only the east side of the street. 

One resident took a reporter to a concrete block wall, which several in the neighborhood say shows multiple bullet impact smudges and one deep hole. 

The wall is near the western edge of the sidewalk, where the young couple had been walking in a southerly direction before the gunfire. 

One neighbor said that examination of one of the spent shell casings showed it to be from a .40 caliber firearm. 

The potent .40 caliber handgun cartridge has been adopted by many law-enforcement agencies across the United States, including the California Highway Patrol, and is a frequent choice among civilians who are comfortable with stout recoil. 

Several neighbors said they believe two firearms were used in the shooting because of the rapid rate of fire. After the shooting ceased, two or three assailants ran to a car located a significant distance away, where they made their escape, residents say. 

The sidewalk on the western side of the street is so dark that identification of the suspects — even their race — was impossible, residents say.

15-year old California boy shot

A 15-year-old boy standing in front of a home in the 1900 block of Dijon Street was shot around 9:05 p.m. Monday, police reported.

The teen was transported to a local hospital, where he is in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police said the suspect is a man in his 20s.

Four teens shoot teacher at California school during robbery

A teacher was in his classroom at Edison High School in Fresno, California, on Christmas Eve, when four teen boys, ages 16 and 17, entered the room with a handgun and sawed-off shotgun, intending to rob the computers in the room.  When the teacher, Steven Guerrero, fought back, the teens shot him in the stomach and leg.

The teens were apparently gang members.

The teacher survived the wounds.  The teens were captured and charged.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer announced the arrests on Tuesday. According to the Fresno Bee, he identified the suspects as 17 and 16-year-old Norteno gang members. 

Police have said the teens were armed with a handgun and a sawed-off shotgun when they confronted Edison High School teacher Steven Guerrero in a classroom around 7 p.m. Thursday. 

Guerrero allowed the group to take a computer but then fought back after one of the teens allegedly struck him with a free weight. He was shot in the stomach and leg, but survived. 

Dyer said the shooter was a student at Edison and has confessed.

16-year-old arrested for shooting three other teens

16-year-old Anjohnito Willet, of Pittsburgh, PA, was arrested and charged with wounding three teens and shooting at a fourth near Brashear High School in Pittsburgh.

He was charged with four counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endagerment, and illegally possessing a firearm as a juvenile.

According to reports:

Willet was attempting to get revenge for a robbery and assault last month, said police.

Police said the shooting victims - Brashear students Andrew Umphrey, 17, DaJour Jones, 15, and Robert Minor, 17 - were suspects in an Oct. 18 assault inside the school in which Willet was the victim.

Willet "decline to prosecute," said police. "He made remarks that he would take matters in to his own account."

Two of the shooting victims were shot in the head and the third was shot in the foot less than a quarter-mile from the school. They are recovering in area hospitals.

15 year old Chicago area teen shot in apparent gang incident

A 15 year old was shot outside of his school in what appears to be a gang related incident:

Witnesses said the victim was being chased before he was shot around 2:30 p.m. at Leland and Kimball, which is just across the street from Roosevelt High School, 3436 West Wilson. The suspect yelled a gang slogan before pulling the trigger, witnesses said.

"And then after that, the guy got shot in his leg and fell to the ground, and all I saw was a whole bunch of police start flooding the school," Darius Ortiz, witness, said.

15-year old North Carolina boy injured in school shooting by fellow student

A 15-year old boy was shot and injured by an 18-year old fellow student at Carver High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Police say Christopher Lamont Richardson Jr. was arrested Friday and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of firearm on school property, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and discharging a firearm within city limits. 

Officers responded to a report of a shooting around 2:30 p.m. Friday at Carver High School in Winston-Salem. Police say the school had been conducted a fire drill when a school resource officer heard shots fired. 

A 15-year-old student was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

8 year old Texas boy shot for no reason

An 8 year old Texas boy, playing in his apartment was shot by a man in a truck for no apparent reason:

The parents of an 8-year-old Dallas boy shot in the face Tuesday night say he is improving, even though he still needs a breathing tube and remains listed in critical but stable condition. Donald Maiden, Jr., called DJ by family and friends, was shot while playing at this Lake Highlands apartment complex. On Thursday, his parents spoke exclusively to CBS 11 News.

“When he ran in I just screamed,” said Latamarin Locklin, DJ’s mother, recalling how the boy looked as he ran home after the shooting. “His mouth was just hanging off and it was just a big hole,” she said. Locklin remembers a neighbor urging her to put pressure on her son’s mouth. “ I just threw him on the couch and laid him in my arms and put pressure on his mouth with the towel.”

“When I first saw him in ICU I started crying,” Donald Maiden, Sr. said of his son. DJ’s father was working in Louisiana. The boy was in a medically-induced coma when Dad first saw him. “I just put my head down in his bed and was holding his hand at the same time. And he opened his eyes. And when I raised back up I looked and there were tears rolling down his eyes and it gave me a little bit of spirit in my heart. It was joy, I guess he was kind of happy to know I was there. “

DJ was shot “out of the blue,” according to his mom, by a man driving a pickup truck who’d been hanging around her apartment complex.

Police arrested Brian Cloninger and are holding him on a $2.2 million dollar bond. Locklin says investigators are very helpful, but there’s still one huge unanswered question. “I just want to know why. Why?”

Children should be able to play in their homes without fear of being shot.

Ohio toddler injured in shooting

An Ohio toddler has been injured in a shooting that took the life of her mother.

"A toddler injured in a shooting that left her 22-year-old pregnant mother dead in Brown County is "improving," the child's father said Friday.

Brittany Stykes, of Ripley, was found shot to death Wednesday evening inside a car that crashed along a stretch of U.S. Route 68.

Stykes was found inside her Jeep about a half-mile from the intersection of U.S. Route 68 and Gooselick Road before 8 p.m. She was with her 14-month-old daughter, Aubree, who received a head wound.

Shane Stykes, Aubree's father, was laying in bed with his daughter inside Cincinnati Children's Hospital Friday and told NewsChannel5’s sister station WCPO that the toddler is breathing on her own.

"I'd say she's going to be here for a while," Shane Stykes said.

Stykes and Aubree were found by Craig Labell, who pulled over and called 911 when he saw their vehicle. He initially thought Stykes had simply driven her SUV off the road and into a wooded area between Georgetown and Ripley.

"There's a Jeep off the road in the woods. Looks like somebody drove off the road into the woods and they're passed out at the wheel. Looks a like a girl, female in her 20s or 30s," he told a Brown County dispatcher.

Law enforcement officials responded to the call expecting to investigate a single-vehicle accident. But once at the scene they found Stykes slouched over the steering wheel with multiple gunshot wounds.

She had been shot at least once in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Stykes was four months pregnant.

Brown County authorities said multiple bullets had been fired through the driver's side of the vehicle and passed through the passenger side.

Labell also found Aubree inside the vehicle. She was covered in blood and crying, he told the 911 operator.

"There's a baby in the car seat…The baby is bloody, but conscious,” he told the dispatcher before turning his attention back to Stykes. “I'm trying to see if the mother's breathing."

Investigators said Aubree was at least grazed by one of the bullets that contributed to the death of her mother. They said the bullet passed through Stykes, hit the driver's headrest and struck the infant in the head.

The child, who was conscious and crying at the scene, was initially transported to Southwest Regional Medical Center in Georgetown, Ohio to be treated."

Indiana man and baby shot at in their car by another motorist

A man was driving in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with his baby in the back seat when another car pulled alongside, with three men in it.  The men opened fire on the man's car, hitting it just a foot away from the baby.  

Luckily, no one was injured.  The shooters were eventually captured.

The driver told a NewsChannel 15 photographer that he was sitting in his car with his baby when another car pulled up and someone inside opened fire. The man and his child did not appear to be injured. According to NewsChannel 15 crew on the scene, the baby appeared to be three to six months old. 

"They hit the side that my son was on and the bullet was like about a foot from hitting his door," the driver said. 

It is not completely clear where the actual shooting took place, but the man who said he was shot at as he was turning onto Colonial Avenue off of Anthony Blvd.  

"After the shots were fires, I tried to ram their car and tried to get away from the scene," the driver said. 

Police told WANE they saw the suspects' car in the area shortly after they responded to the shooting. A short pursuit ensued and police chased the suspects to the Twin Oaks apartment complex where the suspects' car crashed into a carport. 

Police said three people ran out of the car. All of them have been arrested.

Texas Mom shoots 10 and 12 year old children and herself

A Texas mother, upset over not qualifying for Food Stamps, shot her 2 children and herself in a welfare office:

A Texas woman who for months was unable to qualify for food stamps pulled a gun in a state welfare office and held a seven-hour standoff with police that ended with her shooting her two children before killing herself, officials said Tuesday.

The 10-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl remained in critical condition Tuesday. Authorities identified the mother as Rachelle Grimmer, 38, and children Ramie and Timothy.

Texas woman, unhappy about denial of food stamps, shoots her kids and then herself

A woman in San Antonio, Texas, went to the state welfare office with her two children, unhappy about being denied food stamps.  The woman, Rachelle Grimmer, 38, then pulled out a gun and a standoff occurred.  It ended when she shot her two children, a girl named Ramie, age 12, and a boy named Timothy, age 10, critically injuring them, then killing herself.

When the family entered the office on Monday shortly before it closed, Grimmer asked to speak to a new caseworker, and not the one whom she worked with before, Texas Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said. 

Grimmer was taken to a private room to discuss her case, then she revealed a gun and the standoff began, Goodman said. 

Police negotiators stayed on the phone with Grimmer throughout the evening, but she kept hanging up, Laredo police investigator Joe Baeza said. She allegedly told negotiators about a litany of complaints against state and federal government agencies. 

Grimmer let a supervisor go unharmed around 7:45 but stayed inside the office with her children. After hanging up the phone around 11:45, police heard three shots, and a riot police team entered the building. Inside, they found Grimmer's body and her two wounded children. 

The children were "very critical" and unconscious, Baeza said.

5 year old Oklahoma boy shot while sitting in car with his mother

An apparent drive-by shot and injured a 5 year old Oklahoma boy while he was sitting in his mother's car. From an article:

A 5-year-old Muskogee boy is in the hospital after he was shot in the back on Saturday night.

MPD Lt. Bryan Stark confirmed the boy is stable and no arrests have been made.

The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. at the Whispering Pines Apartments on Fairmont Street in Muskogee. The child was in a car with his mother when someone started shooting at the vehicle, police said.

The woman took her son to a hospital in Muskogee, and Muskogee EMS took the boy to Tulsa.

"A few inches in either direction [and] we may have had a dead child on our hands," MPD Cpl. Michael Mahan said.

Police said there was an argument that happened before the shooting.

News On 6 spoke to one witness who called 911 after he said he looked out his window and saw a man unload a handgun into a silver car.

"They got in the car and were pulling out and another guy walked out and started shooting a revolver at them," witness Jerry Johnson said. "I knew there was kids in the car. I feel sorry for the kids really, because you know they were the innocent victims in the whole deal."

Neighbors who live in the complex were shocked there was a shooting in their parking lot.

"I pretty much saw some muzzle flashes come out of a car that was about it," witness Michael Boggs said. "I've been here three years... never seen any of it."

Police are asking for any help trying to find the shooter, who fled after firing the gun. Investigators also are looking at surveillance video.

10 year old child shot in Detroit home

A 10 year old Michigan boy was shot in his home:

A 10-year-old and 24-year-old are recovering tonight after being shot on Detroit's east side.

Police say around 4 p.m., someone opened fire on a house on Somerset, striking the victims who were on the porch. 

The 10-year-old was shot in the arm and the adult was shot in the back--both  are expected to be OK, according to police. 

We're told the alleged shooter is in custody. Police say they don't think the victims were the intended target, but they reportedly knew the shooter. 

4 year old Alabama girl shot in home by bullet intended for someone else

A 4 year old Tuscaloosa, Alabama girl was shot and injured inside of her home. The bullet was intended to be shot into the home but the little girl was an innocent victim. From an article:

At least one shooter fired several times into a home in the area of 7th Street at 31st Avenue in west Tuscaloosa and instead of shooting their intended victim, hit a sleeping 4-year-old with two bullets Friday night, according to the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit. 

Sgt. Dale Phillips, the unit's commander, said Tamerra Harper was found alive but badly injured and was taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham for treatment. Phillips said she remains there in critical but stable condition.

The investigation is still in progress, but Phillips said the unit is under the impression that shooting into the home was intentional, but the little girl was not the target Friday night. No arrests have been made at this time.

The Tuscaloosa News is reporting that Harper suffered a head wound and a broken arm as a result of the shooting and is breathing on a ventilator at Children's, where she will undergo surgery to remove the bullet from her arm.

“Who would do something like this and hurt an innocent baby, a four-year-old baby?” Harper's grandmother, La Shonda Harper-Gibson asked the Tuscaloosa News. “I hope that they find whoever did this and make them suffer. I hope that God touches their hearts and changes them, is what I really hope.”

Children should be able to sleep in their homes without getting shot.

Indiana teen shot while standing outside of home

A 15 year old girl and another young man were shot and injured while standing outside of a home on Tuesday:

A 15-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man who were shot while standing outside a home on Smith St. Tuesday afternoon remain hospitalized and police cannot provide condition updates.  However the victims have been identified as Lashire M. Collins and James E. Starts III of Fort Wayne.

The shooting took place in the 4400 block of Smith Street just before 5:00 p.m. When officers arrived they found two people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Both victims were taken to the hospital where Collins was last listed in stable condition, while Starts was last listed in critical condition..

According to investigators, Collins and Starts were standing in the front yard of a home at the intersection of Smith Street and Senate Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect fire several shots while standing west of that intersection and then run southbound in an alley west of Smith St.
