14 year old California boy injured by stray bullet while walking home from school
A 14 year old boy was injured by a stray bullet apparently meant for someone else as he walked home from school in Antioch, California:
An Antioch teenager, walking home from school, was wounded in a spray of gunfire Monday afternoon. The 14-year-old boy was on the 1400 block of Sycamore Street, a few blocks from his house, when a bullet struck him in the lower arm."Everybody scattered when they heard the shots, everybody scattered," witness Dovie Brown told KTVU.She heard four shots and came out of her house, to see the boy running in a panic, apparently trying to get home.Brown and others sat him down on a grassy front yard, as police and paramedics were called."He kept saying, 'I'm okay, I'm okay," she recalled, the boy calm as blood ran down his arm."I got a towel to wrap it in, " added Brown, "and someone called his mother, and she came running down, and she was really messed-up, I thought she was going to faint, so I tried to comfort her.""It is an area known for some violence," Antioch Police Lieutenant John Vanderklugt told KTVU.Witnesses told investigators the bullets came from a man walking on the same side of the street as the victim, who started shooting his handgun at a small, dark, compact car that sped away."Our victim was in between the suspect and the vehicle, and that's how our victim was injured," explained Vanderklugt.

Teen boy and girl injured in "hail of gunfire" in California
A 16-year old girl and a 17-year old boy were walking together down a very dark street in a neighborhood of San Bernardino, California, when they were fired upon, most likely by multiple shooters. Both teens were injured, one in the leg and the other in the arm, though luckily not life-threatening.
The shooters had at least one .40-caliber handgun. They have yet to be identified or captured.
The neighborhood has had a lot of crime lately, including shootings.
From an article:
Neighbors said Sunday they heard between 15 and 20 gunshots in rapid succession out of the darkness on the sidewalk across from their homes.
“These were just kids. They weren’t gang members. ... The girl couldn’t have weighed more than 80 pounds,” said one neighbor, who declined to be identified.
The teens were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. No further information about their condition was available Sunday.
Out of fear of retaliation, not one neighbor felt comfortable disclosing their name.
There are no city street lights in this stretch of North Mountain Avenue, immediately north of Lynnwood Avenue and west of Del Rosa. Houses occupy only the east side of the street.
One resident took a reporter to a concrete block wall, which several in the neighborhood say shows multiple bullet impact smudges and one deep hole.
The wall is near the western edge of the sidewalk, where the young couple had been walking in a southerly direction before the gunfire.
One neighbor said that examination of one of the spent shell casings showed it to be from a .40 caliber firearm.
The potent .40 caliber handgun cartridge has been adopted by many law-enforcement agencies across the United States, including the California Highway Patrol, and is a frequent choice among civilians who are comfortable with stout recoil.
Several neighbors said they believe two firearms were used in the shooting because of the rapid rate of fire. After the shooting ceased, two or three assailants ran to a car located a significant distance away, where they made their escape, residents say.
The sidewalk on the western side of the street is so dark that identification of the suspects — even their race — was impossible, residents say.

10-year old California boy shot and killed by 9-year old girl

Eric Klyaz, age 10 |
area, in San Diego, California. No adults were present, but they were being supervised by the girl's 14-year old sister.
But the two younger kids got hold of a loaded .9mm handgun, and it was unintentionally discharged, hitting Eric in the chest. He died soon after.
From an article:
According to police, the child and a 9-year-old girl were handling a loaded gun in the garage of a housing complex when the shooting took place, local news outlets report. Though the boy, identified by ABC 10News as Eric Klyaz, was rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
As the Associated Press notes, the girl's 14-year-old sibling was babysitting at the time, and no adults were present. After the shot rang out shortly after 4 p.m., adults nearby ran to the garage and discovered Klyaz had been shot in the chest. Police found a 9 mm semi-automatic at the scene.
"I heard a loud pop and said that didn’t sound good,” a neighbor told Fox 5 News San Diego. ”I found a boy curled up in the fetal position with a red dot on his back it looked like a gun shot.”
Klyaz's parents also rushed to the garage, which residents dubbed more of a playhouse for kids in the complex, and discovered he was not breathing. The 10-year-old's father cradled his son while others attempted CPR, U-T San Diego reports.
San Diego Police Department officials have launched an investigation into the accidental shooting, and the 9-year-old girl's parents could face criminal charges, NBC 7 News San Diego reports.
"We’re going to have to investigate where the gun was and whether the child had immediate access to it or if they were digging around in an area where they wouldn’t expect for them to get to,” Lt. Joseph Ramos told the local NBC affiliate.Another girl witnessed the shooting. From another article:
Neighbors of the community say it’s common for the children to play together, bouncing from one open garage to the next.
“I just can’t believe it,” said resident Julie Choi whose two sons often played with the victim. She described the boy as a fourth grade student.
Choi saw the boy riding on his scooter outside her home moments before the shooting.
The girl who witnessed the shooting was very shaken up but uninjured police said. She will be questioned about what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.
Carla Mangus said residents all keep their garages open and the complex is “like a big, huge playground” for the children.
She now has the difficult task of explaining to her son why he will no longer have his playmate.
“Playing with him every single day and now he’s not there,” Mangus said. “We’re going to have to deal with that.”Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Man pleads guilty to leaving loaded, unlocked gun in death of teen who was unintentionally shot with gun
50-year-old Kevin Brennick, of San Diego, California, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of leaving a loaded firearm where a minor could access it resulting in death or serious injury of a child. From an article:
Brennick is the father of one of the two boys who were with Luke Lipscomb, 17, when he was shot on the afternoon of Nov. 4, 2011, between the eyes inside Brennick's home. Lipscomb apparently shot himself in the face with a .22-caliber rifle while high on synthetic drugs. He died two weeks later.
Investigators said the gun had been left unguarded and loaded in the kitchen. Most of Brennick's weapons were secured in the home, but the rifle was in the kitchen. Brennick used the gun to shoot "varmints" in his yard.

12-year old California boy threatens mass shooting at school
A 12-year old boy in Poway, California, was taken into custody after making an email threat to commit a mass shooting at his school. He gave specific plans about how many he intended to kill, with a list of targets, and the weapons he would use.
His home had 11 firearms owned by his father, though they were stored locked up.

His home had 11 firearms owned by his father, though they were stored locked up.
From an article:
A 12-year-old boy faces possible felony charges after authorities say he threatened via email to carry out a mass shooting today at Twin Peaks Middle School, setting off a scramble to identify and stop him.
The boy, a seventh-grade student at the Poway school, was being evaluated Sunday night at a hospital after investigators tracked him down and served a search warrant Saturday at his family home.
Eleven guns were found there under lock and key, and the boy didn’t have access to them, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.
In the email, the boy listed one of his teachers by name and 23 unidentified classmates as his targets.
He also wrote about several types of firearms and said he had 3,000 rounds of ammunition. ...
The boy sent the email to a school administrator on Friday evening, authorities said. In it, he identified a specific teacher as a target and “at least 23 children” and made references to several firearms, including a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and an M-16 rifle.
He also gave locations on campus for the shooting and wrote that it would take place today during second period, or about 9:30 a.m. ....
Sheriff’s Capt. Bill Donahue said the student was identified and authorities were at his family’s Poway home with a search warrant by 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The boy’s father owned several guns — all of them locked up and not accessible to the teenager — including five rifles, three shotguns and three handguns, all of which were confiscated, officials said.
Donahue said the boy’s parents were shocked and cooperated fully. There was no evidence that anyone else was involved in the threat.
