Drunk Ohio father fires gun in home and holds his children hostage

A 39-year old drunk man was having an argument with his wife at home in Akron, Ohio, when he fired a shot from his gun, apparently threatening her.  She called the police, and a four-hour standoff ensued until he surrendered.

His four children, ages 10, 15, 16, and 18 were held by him that entire time.  Luckily, no one was injured.

From an article:
Vincente Castellano Jr., 39, of North Firestone Boulevard, was arrested on charges of domestic violence, aggravated menacing and using a weapon while intoxicated.
Police were first called to the home in the 300 block of North Firestone Boulevard at about 8 p.m. when a woman contended Castellano was intoxicated and had fired a gun into the bedroom floor during an argument.
The woman talked to officers outside of the house and said four children, ages 10, 15, 16 and 18, were still inside the house with Castellano.
SWAT officers surrounded the house and during the next four hours communicated with the teens using a cell phone and their Facebook accounts. The children eventually walked outside and Castellano subsequently surrendered at the urging of police negotiators, police said.

3-year old Ohio girl injured by gun in home, mother and felon father lied about shooting

3-year old girl victim (source)
A 3-year old girl was in her home in Cincinnati, Ohio, when a gun was fired and injured her.  The parents, Ebony McDavis, 28, and her boyfriend,Cordero Warren, 25, who lived together at the address, initially told police that the shooting had happened on the street by unknown assailants, but later it was determined that it had happened in the home.

The father is a felon who is not legally supposed to possess a gun.

The girl is recovering.

From an article:
Cincinnati Police responded to 3610 Tacoma Ave. on Dec. 17 for a report of a shooting. Police found the girl at the scene suffering from the gunshot wound. She was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center where she remains hospitalized.
The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office said the girl's mother -- Ebony McDavis, 28, of Avondale -- and her boyfriend -- Cordero Warren, 25, of Westwood -- were living together at the Tacoma Avenue residence.
Authorities say Warren -- a convicted felon -- possessed a loaded gun at the residence. That was the gun that fired and wounded the girl.  The prosecutor's office said Warren's prior felony conviction for drug trafficking prevents him from legally possessing a firearm.
Warren and McDavis are charged with falsification for giving false statements about the incident. The prosecutor's office said the couple initially blamed the shooting on random gunfire by unknown people in the neighborhood. Police determined the girl was shot in the residence.

Both are charged with tampering with evidence, a third degree felony. The prosecutor's office said the charge is because the gun that caused the injury to the girl was disposed of and was never recovered.
McDavis is charged with one count of child endangering (a first degree misdemeanor), one count of assault (a first degree misdemeanor), one count of tampering with evidence (a third degree felony) and one count of falsification (a first degree misdemeanor).
McDavis faces three years in prison if she's convicted of all charges.

Warren is charged one count of child endangering (second degree felony), one count of assault (first degree misdemeanor), 1 count of negligent  assault (a third degree misdemeanor), one count of tampering with evidence (a third degree felony), one count of weapon under disability (a third degree felony) and one count of falsification (a first degree misdemeanor).
If convicted of all charges, Warren faces 17 years in prison.
It is likely that the shooting was unintentional.

Ohio toddler injured in shooting

An Ohio toddler has been injured in a shooting that took the life of her mother.
Photo from http://www.newsnet5.com/

From the article:
"A toddler injured in a shooting that left her 22-year-old pregnant mother dead in Brown County is "improving," the child's father said Friday.
Brittany Stykes, of Ripley, was found shot to death Wednesday evening inside a car that crashed along a stretch of U.S. Route 68.
Stykes was found inside her Jeep about a half-mile from the intersection of U.S. Route 68 and Gooselick Road before 8 p.m. She was with her 14-month-old daughter, Aubree, who received a head wound.
Shane Stykes, Aubree's father, was laying in bed with his daughter inside Cincinnati Children's Hospital Friday and told NewsChannel5’s sister station WCPO that the toddler is breathing on her own.
"I'd say she's going to be here for a while," Shane Stykes said.
Stykes and Aubree were found by Craig Labell, who pulled over and called 911 when he saw their vehicle. He initially thought Stykes had simply driven her SUV off the road and into a wooded area between Georgetown and Ripley.
"There's a Jeep off the road in the woods. Looks like somebody drove off the road into the woods and they're passed out at the wheel. Looks a like a girl, female in her 20s or 30s," he told a Brown County dispatcher.
Law enforcement officials responded to the call expecting to investigate a single-vehicle accident. But once at the scene they found Stykes slouched over the steering wheel with multiple gunshot wounds.
She had been shot at least once in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Stykes was four months pregnant.
Brown County authorities said multiple bullets had been fired through the driver's side of the vehicle and passed through the passenger side.
Labell also found Aubree inside the vehicle. She was covered in blood and crying, he told the 911 operator.
"There's a baby in the car seat…The baby is bloody, but conscious,” he told the dispatcher before turning his attention back to Stykes. “I'm trying to see if the mother's breathing."
Investigators said Aubree was at least grazed by one of the bullets that contributed to the death of her mother. They said the bullet passed through Stykes, hit the driver's headrest and struck the infant in the head.
The child, who was conscious and crying at the scene, was initially transported to Southwest Regional Medical Center in Georgetown, Ohio to be treated."

Ohio 16 year old shot in a fight

An Ohio 16 year old has been killed during a fight:
A 16-year-old boy was killed after being shot on the far east side of Columbus Monday evening.
According to Columbus police, officers were called to the 3300 block of Suffield Drive on a report of a large fight at about 7:23 p.m. Monday.
Arriving officers and medic personnel located the victim, identified as Isaiah A. Giles, in front of a home in the area with at least one gunshot wound.
Giles transported to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8 p.m.
According to detectives, the shooting occurred after a fight escalated and the participants pulled out weapons.
A police dispatcher said that Columbus police received a large number of calls regarding the shooting. A pizza delivery driver, who also called police, told dispatchers he began following a possible suspect.
This was the second time officers had been called to the area regarding a fight on Monday. Officers were dispatched to the same location at about 11:15 a.m. Detectives said that there was no indication of weapons at that time.
We don't know yet who the shooter was but it could have been another teen. Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Two Ohio children found dead in grandparents' home

(UPDATED -- see below)
Austin Wiseman, age 12, and Blake Campbell, age 9

Two young boys were found dead in the home of their Jackson, Ohio grandparents. From a story about the incident:
Two brothers, ages 9 and 12, were found shot to death inside their grandparents’ home in Jackson County yesterday, and authorities are saying little about what happened.
They did not release the boys’ names, but neighbors identified them as 12-year-old Austin Wiseman and 9-year-old Blake Campbell. Public records show that a woman who lives at one of two addresses involved yesterday, 32-year-old Kelly Lenoir Harris, is the mother of those two boys.
No one would say where she was last night or whether any arrests had been made.
Authorities said the Jackson County sheriff’s office received a 911 call from a cellphone just after 11 a.m. The caller said the two boys had been found dead in an upstairs bedroom. County Coroner Gregory Hawker said this morning that a .44-caliber, six-shot revolver was found at the scene. Hawker said there were other weapons present, but the revolver was the only one loaded. The weapon has not yet been determined to be the one that fired the fatal shots, Hawker said, adding that preliminary autopsy results should be available this afternoon.
UPDATE (6/28/13):   According to authorities, Austin shot and killed Blake before turning the gun on himself.  They were brothers, at the home of their grandparents'.  It's unknown if it was an intentional murder/suicide or if Blake's death was unintentional.  Both were shot in the head.  There were several guns found at the scene, though only the .44-caliber handgun used in the crime was loaded.  From an article:

Authorities determined Thursday that Austin Wiseman, 12, shot and killed his half-brother Blake Campbell, 9, before shooting himself in the head around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The boy's grandparents, with whom they lived, came home from an errand and found the dead boys in the Jackson home's bedroom, the Columbus Dispatch reports. ....
Police have not determined yet if Campbell, killed first by a gunshot to the head from a few feet away, was shot accidentally. Several guns were found at the scene, police said, including a .44-caliber revolver. Authorities have yet to determine if that gun was used in the murder-suicide, but the handgun was reportedly the only loaded weapon
Who owns the gun - and how Wiseman got his hands on it - remains unclear. The boy's mother, Kelly Lenoir Harris, 32, lives in a garage apartment behind the grandparents' East South St. home. It's unclear where she was at the time of the shootings.

9 year old boy Ohio shot by his cousin

Matthew Schreckengaust, age 9
It's happened again. A young child has been shot by his 14 year old cousin in Ohio. From an article:
A 9-year-old boy is dead in Ohio after he was accidentally shot Friday afternoon while handling a gun with his 14-year-old cousin, according to local media reports.
Matthew Schreckengaust was shot while "examining a gun" with his 14-year-old cousin in Minerva, Ohio, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Authorities told Fox8 Cleveland that the boys were "looking at and handling a gun that they believed was unloaded" when the weapon was discharged and hit Schreckengaust. He later died from the gunshot wounds at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio.
Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier said the gun was owned by the boys' uncle.
“Two young boys inquisitive about a firearm and, unfortunately, this resulted in a horrific tragedy for the family and for our community,” Maier said, according to the Beacon Journal.
(Matthew's obituary)

The accidental shooting happened on ASK day. Please look at the website of the Center to Prevent Youth Violence for more information about asking if there is a gun where your children play. Every year on the first day of summer, the campaign encourages parents to ask the hard question about guns in homes. Too many children die every day from accidental shootings ( and other shootings as well). As the CPYV says, "Asking Saves Kids."

16 year old Ohio boy shot at holiday week-end carnival

A 16 year old Ohio boy was shot at a carnival held during last week-end's holiday. From an article:
The first weekend of the summer tourist season was marred by deadly violence. Shots rang out near the Hampton Carnival on Coliseum Drive Saturday night. One teenager died and four other teens were injured after police said someone started shooting into a crowd.
16-year-old Ralphael Davis Jr. died at the hospital. WAVY.com spoke to Davis' family about the tragic shooting. Davis' aunt, Dawn Moses, said her nephew was leaving the carnival near the Hampton Coliseum when the shooting happened.
Hampton Police received several calls in reference to a shooting on Coliseum Drive around 11 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said there was an argument between two groups of people when someone pulled out a gun and started shooting.
A 14-year-old boy from Hampton was shot in the back and is now listed in critical condition. A 17-year-old boy from Newport News was shot in the leg and has since been released from the hospital. An 18-year-old male from Hampton was also shot in the leg and went home to recover. A 16-year-old Newport News girl was shot in the ankle and also went home.
Police said the shooting happened a few blocks from the Hampton Carnival in the 1900 block of Coliseum Drive. Davis' family members told WAVY.com they did not understand why the shootings happened at a place their kids were supposed to feel safe.
"This is kind of hard for us to come to grips with because he was young, and his life was cut short for senseless violence," said Davis' aunt, Dawn Moses. "I just feel sorry for the parents of that young man as well because when he is caught his life will be cut short as well. And the other children that were injured.... it was just senseless."
Davis' family said what haunts them now was not knowing what led to his death. The loss was compounded for Davis' family because they must prepare to bury him on the same weekend they buried his great grandmother three years ago. They said they were coping by remembering Davis' love of life and sports.
"He was just bright and cheerful," Davis said. "He loved basketball; he used to dance all the time when he was kid. He gave you no problems."
Even before the carnival was set up, 10 On Your Side found threatening posts on the WAVY Facebook page. The posts warned of someone threatening violence at the Hampton Carnival.
10 On Your Side told Hampton Police about the threats. Sgt. Jason Price said they found the person who made the threats, and that individual was not involved in Saturday's shooting. Price said the person was not arrested because the posts were not classified as actual threats.

4 year old Ohio boy shot while sitting in father's car

A 4 year old Akron, Ohio boy was shot and killed by a bullet that came through the roof of his father's car. The story is still unfolding according to this article:
An Akron dad was charged with multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter after his 4-year-old son was shot and killed on Wednesday, police said.
Terrance Allen, 48, was also charged with child endangering, weapons under disability and tampering with evidence. He was booked into the Summit County Jail on Wednesday.
A Summit County Sheriff's deputy was in the area of South Arlington Street and Davies Avenue when he was flagged down by Allen, according to Lt. Rick Edwards with the Akron Police Department.
The man told the deputy his 4-year-old son, Jamarcus Allen, had been shot in the head inside of a Ford Taurus.
Robert Leslie, who works for a muffler shop, saw the father on the ground, holding the child in his arms.
"All of a sudden, the officer finally yanked real hard, grabbed the baby, ran to the ambulance and the ambulance took off out of here like crazy," Leslie said.
A bullet hole was found in the roof of the car above a rear, passenger seat. Police also found a gun in the car.
The child was transported to Akron Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:31 a.m.  An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
"I'm going crazy about what happened to my baby. I want to know what happened," said Jamarcus's mother, Jamella Allen, 42. Jamarcus loved Batman, Spiderman and football, relatives said.
"He could have been anybody in the world. He was just about to start kindergarten. Who knows what he could have done out here," said Jasmine Palmer, the boy's cousin.
Despite the criminal charges filed against the father, police have not answered the question, who pulled the trigger? Officers said it was possible that the boy got his hands on the gun and accidentally shot himself inside the car.
"This is still an an evolving situation here. We're trying to figure out where it happened, how it happened and what happened," Edwards said.
According to court records, Terrance Allen has a prior felony conviction out of Cuyahoga County for burglary, and therefore, should not own or carry a firearm.
However, Jamella Allen said Jamarcus found a gun hidden in a bathroom wall of their Akron home about a week ago.
Jamella said she questioned Terrance about it, and he informed her that it was a laser gun that he bought at a gun show. Jamella said she told Terrance to get rid of it.
It's not clear if that is the same gun that killed the 4-year-old boy.
Felons should not have easy access to guns. Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Pregnant 16-year old Ohio girl shot in head and killed by ex-boyfriend

Anna Karam, age 16
16-year old Anna Karam was four months pregnant when she was shot in the head and killed by her ex-boyfriend, David Stoddard, 24, in Akron, Ohio.  Stoddard burst into her home and started firing, fatally shooting her in the head and injuring another young woman in thead, before fleeing.

From an article:

Anna Karam, 16, and four months pregnant, died of a gunshot wound to the head. Jessica Halman, 19, ofNorton, is showing signs of recovery at Akron General Medical Center after suffering a similar head wound.
On Monday, Nelson recalled the outburst of alleged gunman David Stoddard, 24. He recalled as many as eight bullets being fired as Stoddard pursued him and others through the house. It only ended with a jammed gun over Nelson’s and his sister Jolynn Risten’s heads.
“He came in ruthlessly and just started shooting,” Nelson said.
Stoddard is in custody, charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder and felonious assault. Those who witnessed his rampage are left asking why.
Stoddard, who lives in Barberton, had at one time dated Nelson’s other sister, Jennifer Risten. The 21-year-old woman lives with Nelson and Anna at the South Akron home.
Jennifer Risten and Stoddard dated a short time last year and broke up months ago.
The two remained friends and Stoddard showed no signs of trouble, including earlier when he joined the group during an outing.
“After 2:30 everything went sour,” Jennifer Risten said Monday.
Stoddard showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s home on East Archwood Avenue about 4 a.m. Sunday. Nelson was the first to see him at a back door. Stoddard was armed and angry and looking for Jennifer Risten. She wasn’t home.
“I walked up to him and I tried to talk to him but he wasn’t having any,” Nelson said. “He told me he was on a bunch of trash and I said, ‘Not here, we’re going to have to go outside real quick.’ ”
“He was like, ‘No, I’m here on some trash, I got some guns.’ ”
Trash is slang for anger or torment.
In a flash, Stoddard burst inside the home, pulling out his gun and firing the first of about eight shots. Karam and Jolynn Risten were coming downstairs amid the shouting and gunfire. Nelson said he tried to rush the women upstairs. But the gunfire was starting.
Karam was struck first while in the stairway. Halman, who had tried to talk to Stoddard, was shot near the kitchen. No one else was injured.
Nelson recalled holding Jolynn Risten on the floor when Stoddard’s gun jammed over their heads. Stoddard then pleaded for Nelson to kill him.
“After the gun jammed, he kept putting it in our face, telling us we knew what it was [that triggered his outrage] and then he asked me if I could put the gun in his mouth.
For a second, I wanted to do it. He just took my best friend’s life,” Nelson said.
Instead, Stoddard fled the home and got inside a black Nissan Pathfinder. He apparently drove to a Wadsworth motel, where police spotted his SUV parked on High Street. Wadsworth officers and Medina County SWAT officers arrested Stoddard without incident inside a room later Sunday morning.

According to another article, the shooter may have actually been gunning for another ex-girlfriend.

5-year old Ohio boy shot in head, and grandmother killed

Cole Tyler Reed, age 5
A 5-year old boy, Cole Tyler Reed, in Columbiana County, Ohio, was gravely injured and left unable to talk after being shot in the head.  He was recently allowed to be taken off of a respirator, and is able to use hand gestures to communicate.

His grandmother, Melinda Todd, with whom he was staying, was shot and killed in the incident.  The shooter is at large.

Cole and his grandmother were found by Cole's 12-year old sister.

From an article:

Cole Tyler Reed was shot in the left side of his head and underwent surgery Monday at Akron Children's Hospital. Officials said the child is not speaking but he is giving "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" signals.
Cole's grandmother, 43-year-old Melinda Todd, was shot and killed at her home earlier this week.
Todd's daughters found her body and the injured boy when they got off the bus on Monday afternoon.
Investigators are still waiting for a coroner's preliminary report, which may give them a time frame for when the shootings happened.
The person who killed Todd and wounded Cole remains at large. Police said they have no leads and no suspects, but they do have a person of interest.

Sadly, little Cole is no stranger to violence:

Cole's mother is serving 18 years to life in prison for killing her 7-month-old son, which is why Cole was living with his grandmother.

Two Ohio teens arrested for shooting in Toledo

A man was shot in the buttocks in Toledo.  When officers responded, they pursued two teen suspects, one of which dropped a gun in the chase, the other trades shots with the police officer before being caught.

From an article:

Neither the officer nor the suspect was hit, and no injuries were reported. Police on Thursday night arrested two teenage male suspects believed to be involved in a Nicholas Street shooting.
The Toledo Police Department received reports just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday of a person shot in the buttocks on the 500 block of Nicholas Street. Lt. Mark King said the person was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, for a nonlife threatening injury. His name was not released.
A nearby police car heard the shooting report, and officers saw two people walking down an alley off Nicholas Street, Mr. King said.
Officers decided to investigate the two people, and when one officer got out of the car the two suspects ran in separate directions.
One suspect was lost in the darkness and dropped or threw a gun as he jumped a fence; police later found and arrested that suspect. Mr. King said he did not know where the arrest occurred.
An officer chased the other suspect for about 60 feet. That suspect then stopped, turned around, and fired one shot at the officer, Mr. King said. The round struck a garage on the alley off Nicholas Street. The officer, whose name was not released, immediately fired one shot and did not hit the suspect, Mr. King said. The suspect started to run again, the officer lost sight of him in the darkness, and then put out a description of him.
A second police crew heard the shooter's description and saw someone running who matched it. The officer’s police car slid over wet grass and hit a fence in the yard of a house on the 500 block of Carlton Street. Mr. King said the police car hit the fence, which hit the suspect and knocked the suspect down.
Police officers found a gold-colored gun and two live rounds and one spent round underneath the suspect, Mr. King said.
