17-year old Florida girl shot and killed by mother in murder/suicide

Chetana Guduru, age 17 (source)
A 17-year old girl, Chetana Guduru, was shot twice and killed by her mother, Sujatha Guduru, in their Oviedo, Florida home.  The mother then turned the gun on herself, hitting herself in the chest.  She later recovered, however, and was charged for the murder.

From an article:
Guduru told authorities she shot her daughter, Chetana Guduru, a Seminole High School senior, at least twice in a botched murder-suicide at their Oviedo home on Jan. 27.
Guduru said she feared that no one would care for her daughter after she committed suicide, police told the Orlando Sentinel.
Guduru’s attorney, Brian Bieber of Miami, said Jan. 31 that Guduru has been mentally ill for most of the last 20 years and may plead insanity. ...
Alarmed by [an] e-mail, her brother got to the house about 7:20 a.m. and found them both still alive, according to police.
Guduru's daughter died a short time later at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Her mother told police she had shot her daughter twice, reported the newspaper. ....
Bieber hinted that because of her mental health history, Guduru should not have been able to purchase the .38-caliber revolver, the gun she used, at a local gun shop six days before the shooting.
But gun restrictions only prohibit ownership of two very narrow groups of mental health sufferers: those who have been committed to a mental institution and those found by a judge or government agency to be a danger to themselves or others.
Guduru was a single mother who lived in her home with her daughter and mother — Chetana's grandmother — who was at home when the shootings took place but was asleep, police reported.

Kelly and Joshua Boren, ages 5 and 7 (source)
A Utah police officer, Joshua Boren, failed to show up at work, so his coworkers went to his home to investigate, in Spanish Fork, Utah.  They discovered him and four of his family shot to death in the home, apparently at his own hand.

He had killed his wife, Kelly Boren, his 7-year old son Joshua, his 5-year old daughter, Haley, and his 55-year old mother-in-law Marie King, before killing himself.

From an article, which has many other images and details:
Police said the five were found dead about 11pm when co-workers became concerned that Boren didn't show up for his night shift as a patrol officer at the Lindon Police Department.
Officers who looked through the window saw blood on the carpet and shell casings in the front room of the two-story home, police said.
After officers entered the home, they discovered 'a large quantity of blood on the stairway leading to the second floor of the residence,' police told KSL
After officers entered the home, they discovered "a large quantity of blood on the stairway leading to the second floor of the residence."

2 South Carolina children killed in domestic shooting

In the third domestic shooting in about as many days, two more small South Carolina children are dead in a domestic murder/suicide:
A family of Jehovah's Witnesses have been found dead in their South Carolina home after what police say was a shocking murder-suicide.
The bodies of a couple - believed to be Sheddrick and Kia Miller - and their two young children were found Wednesday morning scattered throughout the family's two-story home near Irmo. (...)
Each of the four was shot in the upper body and a handgun, the presumed murder weapon, was found near the father, Wilson said.
He said initial evidence suggested a domestic disturbance. Investigators are checking records to see if there had been any prior domestic violence calls made to the house. (...)
Family friend Rachel Hinson, 25, described them as a good family and said the children were both under the age of five.
She told the Observer she had attended bible study at the Millers' home and went to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with them.
'It's confusing, and it's not understandable why something like that would happen,' said Hinson, who's grandmother lives near the home.
South Carolina is the worst of all 50 states when it comes to domestic homicides, according to a report by the Violence Policy Center in Washington.

5 and 7 year old Utah children shot and killed by police officer father

A family tragedy in Utah resulted in a police officer shooting his 2 young children, his wife, mother-in-law and himself:
A 34-year-old officer with a small Utah police department shot and killed his wife, mother-in-law and two young children and turned the gun on himself, authorities said Friday. (...)
Spanish Fork Lt. Matthew Johnson said the couple had been experiencing marital problems in the past few months, but co-workers say Boren appeared upbeat and didn't show signs of distress before the killings.
"There were no warning signs," Johnson said, adding that police had never been called to the home. "This was a total shock to everyone." (...)
The five deaths come just days after another Utah murder-suicide that left three people dead.
Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva, 32, fatally shot her two daughters, 13-year-old Kenadee Oliva and 7-year-old Isabella Oliva, on Tuesday evening before killing herself at their home in Syracuse, police said.
The murder-suicide happened a day after the Ramsdell-Oliva's fiance packed up to move out of the house, authorities said

16-year-old Alexander Berman and 15-year-old Jacqueline Berman both died from their wounds.

Two young Arizona children shot to death by father in murder/suicide

Two young children, ages 6 and 8, were gunned down by their father during New Year's Eve, before the father turned the gun on himself, in the Phoenix suburb of Tolleson.

From an article:
Police say Alejandro Gallardo, 45, killed the 6- and 8-year-old girls some time early Wednesday in the Phoenix suburb of Tolleson before he took his own life, the Arizona Republic reports.
Cops learned of the killings about 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Neighbors reported hearing fireworks as residents rang in the new year — blasts which may have masked the sounds of Gallardo's sickening slaughter.
Other neighbors recalled past incidents of domestic violence between a man and a woman at the house. A young girl, of no certain relation to the dead, appears to have stumbled upon the carnage.
"It was terrified screaming, she was screaming in Spanish over and over again," Brad Haltom told the Republic. "What I got is that she was crying over something. She was crying hysterically."

Two California children and mother killed by father in murder/suicide

A 12-year old boy, Ramon Miranda Jr., his 10-year old sister, Rayna Miranda, and their mother, Silvia Miranda were shot to death by the father, Ramon Miranda, in their Fontana, California, home before the father turned the gun on himself.

The family's 16-year old son came home to discover the shooting.

From an article:
In a house where blood covered several rooms, [a 16-year old boy] found all four family members dead from gunshot wounds, police said Tuesday.
Fontana police concluded it was most likely a murder suicide.
Ramon Miranda, 38, apparently shot and killed 34-year-old Silvia Miranda and their children, 12-year-old Ramon Jr. and 10-year-old Rayna, before turning the gun on himself, according to police and the San Bernardino County coroner's office.
The woman and the children had been shot several times and the man was shot once in the head, police spokeswoman Martha Guzman-Hurtado said.
Investigators found a handgun.
"Everything that has been confirmed so far indicates it could be a murder-suicide, but that has not been confirmed," Guzman-Hurtado said. "They are questioning other people before making that conclusion."
However, investigators weren't looking for any suspects, she said.

1-year old Brooklyn boy and child's father shot by police officer mother in double murder/suicide

A police officer with 13-years of experience on the Brooklyn police force inexplicably shot to death her boyfriend, then her 1-year old son and son of the boyfriend, then turned the gun on herself, in their Brooklyn, New York apartment.

A 19-year old son escaped alive.

From an article:

When authorities entered the first-floor apartment, they found the officer's 33-year-old boyfriend dead in the doorway. The bodies of the 43-year-old officer, a 13-year cop with the 108th precinct, and the child were found in the bedroom.
All three victims died of gunshot wounds, authorities said
The officer's teenage son told police he spoke with his mother when he first woke up Monday morning and everything seemed fine. Then, around 8 a.m., he told police he heard a gunshot -- then more gunshots -- and he saw his mother standing in the apartment with a gun in her hand.
The teenager told police he asked his mother what was happening and she apologized, according to law enforcement sources. Then the officer went into her bedroom and placed the baby on the bed. The 19-year-old son heard another gunshot and jumped out the window to find police.

2-year old boy shot and killed and mother injured by father, who killed himself

In Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, Hollie Jo Ayers brought her 2-year old son to the residence of the boy's father, Kenneth Robert Ayers, 52, for a custody exchange when the two got into a fight.

The father then pulled out a gun and shot his ex-wife multiple times, then shot and killed the boy, before shooting the woman once more in the face and shooting at his own mother, missing.  He then drove to a rural area with the boy's body and then shot and killed himself.

Kenneth Ayers had previously had a restraining order against him for domestic violence against his wife, yet was still able to be armed.

Police said the incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. when Hollie Jo Ayers brought the 2-year-old to a residence on Manor Hill Road in Barree Township, Huntingdon County.
A physical altercation occurred between Kenneth Ayers and Hollie Jo Ayers outside the home. During the fight, Kenneth Ayers shot Hollie Jo Ayers, police said, in the right arm and in both legs before he shot and killed his son.
Police said Kenneth Ayers then placed the child’s body in the back of his vehicle.
When Hollie Jo Ayers attempted to retrieve the child’s body, Kenneth Ayers then shot her in the face, according to police. He then shot at his mother, Mary Ayers, missing her.
State College police said they were alerted to be available for assistance when Ayers then fled to Stormstown.
State police said Ayers was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a wooded area adjacent to state Route 550 in Warriors Mark Township.
State College police Lt. Mark Argiro said police had arrested Ayers in 2010 for violating an order of protection against his wife after a domestic incident.
Police said Hollie Jo Ayers was transported to a hospital for treatment Saturday.
Neither Altoona Regional nor Mount Nittany Medical Center had her listed as a patient.

Connecticut Grandmother kills grandsons and herself

This sad story is making news in Connecticut where a grandmother shot her 2 grandsons and then herself. From an article:
The family of two young boys killed in an apparent-murder suicide — and state police — said Thursday they want to know why the boys' grandmother, with an apparent history of mental health problems, had access to the revolver used in the shooting.
The shooting has added urgency to a legislative review of access to guns that is already under way in Connecticut, where a troubled 20-year-old man gunned down 26 people, including 20 first-graders, on the opposite side of the state at a Newtown school on Dec. 14.
The two boys' grandmother, 47-year-old Debra Denison, was supposed to take them from a day care to a birthday party Tuesday but instead drove to a nearby lake where she and the children were found shot to death after a frantic search. Police said the gun had been taken from her home, and one relative said it apparently belonged to Denison's husband.
"It was in the house, which is hard to believe," said Marcia White, a paternal great-grandmother of the boys, who said Denison's struggles with mental health were well known to the family. (...)
After leaving a suicide note, Denison drove alone Tuesday to the day care center in North Stonington, where she picked up 2-year-old Alton Perry and 6-month-old Ashton Perry. It was Alton's birthday.
The staff at the day care said Denison was on the list of people authorized to collect the children, and nothing seemed amiss — the grandmother was friendly and talkative as she loaded the children in her van. The bodies of Denison and the children were found several hours later.
Robert White said the boys' parents, Jeremy and Brenda Perry, know the day care followed protocol and do not blame it for what happened.
A spokeswoman for the state police, Sgt. Donna Tadiello, said the investigation will look at who purchased the revolver, how Denison obtained it and her history of mental illness.
"Everything about that weapon, we'll try to uncover as much information as possible," Tadiello said.
And now a 2 year old and a 6 month old baby are senselessly dead.

Grandmother shoots and kills two young grandsons and self

47-year-old Debra Denison, of Preston, Connecticut, picked up her grandsons, 2-year-old Alton Perry and 6-year-old Ashton Perry, from daycare and was supposed to take them home for a birthday celebration for Alton.  Instead, she shot and killed both boys before turning the gun on herself.  From an article:
Family members said Denison had bipolar disorder and a history of mental health problems.
Denison was armed with a gun when she left her home Tuesday afternoon and had permission to pick up the boys from daycare.
The bodies were found at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, about two hours after state police issued a statewide Amber Alert for Denison and the boys.

Three Denver children shot, two fatally, by mother in possible murder/suicide

The Perez children, with mother
Around 5 AM, residents in a Denver neighborhood heard gunshots.  When police investigated, they found that a mother, 22-year-old Mayra Perez, had shot three of her young children and then herself.

From an article:

Two children and a woman were shot and killed Wednesday morning in a possible murder-suicide at a Denver home.
A third child was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries sustained during the shooting incident, according to KDVR-TV. The child, who was seen by neighbors being wheeled out of the house on a stretcher, is currently listed in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center.
Authorities appeared to be zeroing in on the theory that the tragic incident was a murder-suicide involving the mother and her children, according to KDVR.

The names of her two slain children are Erick Perez, who was 2 years old, and Nevaeh Morales, who was 6, the Post reported. Three-year-old Isabel is the third child, who is clinging to life at a local hospital.

However, there may be evidence of another person involved:

A neighbor, 21-year-old Rosalinda Bustillos, told the Post that her father-in-law heard a gun go off around 5 a.m.
“Right after that a truck took off really fast,” Bustillos said.
Perez, along with her husband Ricky and their children moved to the neighborhood from Canutillo, Texas, more than a year ago for his job in construction, Perez’s cousin Irene Nuñez told the Post.
"I think they were having arguments," Nuñez said, speaking from Perez's mother's home in Texas. “We just know they had been having problems."

Two California teens shot and killed by father in murder/suicide

Alex Marshall, age 17
Two teens, Alex Marshall, age 17, and his sister, Macaila Marshall, age 14, were asleep on the couch in their Forest Meadows, California home when their father, Philip Marshall, 54, came in and shot each of them one time in the head, killing them. He then turned the gun on himself, committing suicide. A group of teens, who came to visit the home, looked through the window and discovered the scene, alerting 911.

The father, Philip, was estranged from his wife, Sean, who, along with her sister, had filed battery charges against him.

Philip had been an airline pilot who had also worked with the CIA and DEA, and had co-authored a book about a 9/11 conspiracy theory.

From an article:
A Murphys man killed his two children with a Glock 9mm handgun before turning the weapon on himself at his home in Forest Meadows late last week.
Macaila Marshall, age 14
Former airline captain Philip Marshall, 54, killed his son Alex, 17, and daughter Macaila, 14, each with a single bullet to the head, as they slept nestled under blankets on the living room couch. He then pointed the gun at his head and committed suicide. Both children attended Bret Harte High School.
Alex was active on the Bret Harte football team, known for his good sense of humor and well-liked by his classmates. Macaila was very outgoing.
“She was just one of those girls who was full of vim and vigor and so much fun,” said Mike Brown, who lives two doors up the street. “The first time she came over was to borrow a cup of sugar,” he remembered fondly. ...

“The investigation revealed there was no foul play involved in this crime,” Hewitt said. “All evidence and information at the scene confirmed this was indeed a double-murder suicide and there was no evidence to suggest there was an outside party who entered the house and committed a triple murder.”
It is not clear exactly when or why the incident occurred. Hewitt said investigators believe it occurred sometime between Thursday night and Saturday.
School friends exchanged text messages with both Alex and Micaila as late as midnight Thursday and nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary, parents said. Neither of the children showed up for school Friday.
When asked whether Marshall had a history of mental illness, Hewitt said he could not comment, however he did say Monday that he discovered both Philip and his estranged wife, Sean, had a history with law enforcement.
“Philip Marshall filed a burglary report against his estranged wife in November 2008,” Hewitt said. “Sean Marshall and her sister Erin Chamberlain filed a report against Philip Marshall in December 2008 for battery, annoying phone calls and disturbing the peace. He was arrested for battery against Erin Chamberlain.”
Hewitt said investigators believe the murders occurred sometime between Thursday and Saturday morning. Hewitt said the coroner will take a liver temperature to get a more accurate time of death.

7-year old Nevada boy shot and killed in double murder/suicide/arson by police father

A 7-year old boy and his mother were shot to death in their Boulder City, Nevada home by the father, Hans Walters, a 20-year veteran and lieutenant of the Las Vegas police force.  After reporting the killing, the father then said he would shoot anyone who came to the scene, then set his home on fire.  When authorities arrived, Walters showed up with a gun at the door, then went back in and shot himself to death.  The home and bodies burned.

From an article:

Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said a man called 911 at about 8:20 a.m. Monday and told a dispatcher he killed his wife and child, set his house afire and would shoot anyone who approached.
The home is owned by Hans Walters, according to Clark County assessor records. Many know Walters as a Las Vegas police lieutenant married to a former Las Vegas police officer, Kathryn Walters. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that she left the department in 2005.
Boulder City police arrived to find the homeowner with a handgun in the doorway of the burning house before he retreated back inside and apparently killed himself, Paul said.
No shots were fired by police or SWAT officers from Henderson and North Las Vegas who later found the bodies of a 52-year-old man, a 46-year-old woman and a boy inside, Paul said. Officials said the boy was believed to be about 7.
"We're investigating the incident as a murder-suicide at this time," Paul said.

6 month old Florida infant shot and killed by his mother

Jonah Mendoza, age 6 months
This awful story from Florida should make us all take pause. A Florida woman shot and killed her infant son and then shot and injured herself. From an article:
A 20-year-old Florida woman was in critical condition Friday after she shot and killed her 6-month-old son and then turned the gun on herself, police said.
Authorities found Melanie Reyes and her baby after performing a welfare check at the request of Reyes' family, who called 911 to report a statement on her Facebook page in which she "indicated she was going to shoot her child and herself," according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Both were transported to a hospital, where the infant was pronounced dead.
Police recovered the handgun believed used in the shootings from the home.
The incident comes roughly two weeks after Reyes was arrested for aggravated domestic battery after her boyfriend said she struck him with a baseball bat, according to a police report. Her next court date had been scheduled for January 22.
This one is too hard to imagine.

UPDATE (1/5/13): According to another article, the son's name is Jonah Mendoza, Reyes had been recently unemployed, had been fighting with the son's father over visitation rights, and had been accused of domestic violence against a more recent partner.

The victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre

On December 14, a deranged young man, Adam Lanza, shot his mother to death, then chose to target the Sandy Hook Elementary school.  Armed with his mother's .223 Bushmaster AR-15 semi-auto assault rifle and two handguns, multiple 30-round high-capacity ammo clips, and wearing body armor, Lanza shot out the glass in a door and entered the school office.  He attacked the office staff, shooting and killing the principal and a psychologist, then proceeded to at least two classrooms.  In a matter of minutes, he had shot 20 small children to death, all were 6 or 7 years old, and four more adult staff members and teachers.  When police arrived, he then shot himself in the head with a pistol, killing himself.

Here you can find a full gallery and description of each of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting:

President Obama has since called for stronger gun regulation and a renewed ban on assault weapons, as have a large number of other national figures.

The President has also visited Newtown and addressed the mourning community and nation.

Our children and teachers deserve to go to school without the fear of guns in their classrooms or madmen armed with assault rifles storming their school.

ADDENDUM (12/20/12):  There are many, many related posts on this tragedy, but here is a good one regarding the names of the victims and the meaning of them to a mourning nation.

11-year old Mississippi boy killed in murder/suicide by mentally ill father

Andrew Loyd, age 11
11-year old Andrew Loyd was shot three times by his father, Billy Loyd, Jr., in his home in Farmington Mississippi, before the father shot and killed himself.  Andrew later died in the hospital.

Six months ago, Andrew was held hostage, at gunpoint, by his father during a police standoff.  Billy Loyd had also served time in a mental institution.

Why, then, was the father allowed to own guns, and why was Andrew allowed to be anywhere near his father.

The father was also having economic problems.

A news video.

From an article:
Authorities say Loyd had posted on Facebook that he was in financial trouble, feared he would be evicted and his son taken from him. Loyd left funeral instructions and asked any reader to contact authorities.
