12-year old Kentucky boy shoots teen girl by hitting bullet with hammer

A 12-year old boy Louisville, Kentucky boy got hold of a live bullet cartridge and hit it with a hammer.  The round fired and hit a teenage girl, grazing her in the neck.

Police say the boy did it when he hit a bullet cartridge with a hammer. 
Officers say he was playing with the live ammunition when he hit the cartridge on the sidewalk. 
The girl was walking with friends when she felt something hit her neck. 
The boy's mother told police she didn't know how the boy got the bullets. 
He was taken to a juvenile detention center on a criminal recklessness charge.
