3-year old shoots self to death in Texas with unsecured gun

Three-year old Truman Scott was on the front porch of his Wichita Falls, Texas home when he handled a loaded, unsecured handgun.  He discharged the gun and was hit.  He died from the wound.

From an article:

The emergency call for a gunshot wound came in at 12:42 p.m. Thursday at the Tim and Tiffany Scott residence between Forestburg and Saint Jo.
Mitchell said the child was wounded with a handgun and the shooting appears to have occurred on the front porch of the home.
Emergency medical personnel went to the residence, but Truman Scott was pronounced dead at the scene. Justice of the Peace David Allen was called to the scene and he ordered the body transported to the Southwest Institute for Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.
Mitchell said the shooting “appears to be accidental,” but he would not elaborate on any details, reiterating the case has been turned over to the ranger to investigate.
He said both parents and the boy’s other siblings were home at the time of the shooting.

Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

  1. How dare you put the last sentence of your story? Do you think that gun was intentionally set out for this child? How can you publicly get on here and bash these poor people!! Very sad!

  2. How dare they leave a loaded gun where a child can handle it. I'm sorry for their loss, but that sort of inappropriate behavior must not be allowed. Guns and kids don't mix. Homes with children shouldn't have guns, but if they do, they should be stored locked and unloaded.

  3. here is a link to a video that reminds us to secure all guns in a steel lockable gun safe away from children

  4. This child's father was a police officer, and this was his work gun. Both parents have admitted fault in leaving the child unattended for less than a minute, and realize that this was a horrific err in their judgement. Tiffany Scott was a classmate of mine, and I have followed their story since it happened. This is a mistake made my two parents who have grieved and lived with guilt every day since this happened.

    1. Thank you for your moving comment. I'm sorry it happened to them. I hope that others can learn from their mistake. That's one reason we have this blog.

    2. This irresponsible jerk got what he deserved. I can't believe he is still a practicing police officer. It's sad that a child had to die due to an incompetent parent and cop's stupidity.

  5. I have NO sympathy for this family. I feel sad for the child who lost his life. If a police officer can't even be responsible enough to protect his children from his own weapon how can he protect a community from anything? This father got what he deserved.
