5-year old Ohio boy shot in head, and grandmother killed

Cole Tyler Reed, age 5
A 5-year old boy, Cole Tyler Reed, in Columbiana County, Ohio, was gravely injured and left unable to talk after being shot in the head.  He was recently allowed to be taken off of a respirator, and is able to use hand gestures to communicate.

His grandmother, Melinda Todd, with whom he was staying, was shot and killed in the incident.  The shooter is at large.

Cole and his grandmother were found by Cole's 12-year old sister.

From an article:

Cole Tyler Reed was shot in the left side of his head and underwent surgery Monday at Akron Children's Hospital. Officials said the child is not speaking but he is giving "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" signals.
Cole's grandmother, 43-year-old Melinda Todd, was shot and killed at her home earlier this week.
Todd's daughters found her body and the injured boy when they got off the bus on Monday afternoon.
Investigators are still waiting for a coroner's preliminary report, which may give them a time frame for when the shootings happened.
The person who killed Todd and wounded Cole remains at large. Police said they have no leads and no suspects, but they do have a person of interest.

Sadly, little Cole is no stranger to violence:

Cole's mother is serving 18 years to life in prison for killing her 7-month-old son, which is why Cole was living with his grandmother.
