4 year old Kansas boy shot in "gun battle"

The headline of this story should give us pause. "Boy,4, shot during rolling gun battle in KCK". From the article:
A family barbeque ended quickly Saturday night after a 4-year-old boy was seriously injured in a rolling gun battle.
Police say about 8 p.m. they responded to 18th Street and Parallel Parkway on a call of shots fired.  Authorities say two people in two cars were shooting at each other.
Neighbors say they were getting ready for a birthday party for the 4-year-old's mother.
"I heard what I thought was wreck at first, but then we heard gunshots. We ran in the house, but we thought someone got hit. I didn't know it was the little boy," Denise Brown said.
Brown found out just minutes later that two people were hit, including a family friend and 4-year-old Markell Hall Jr.
Family members say Markell was playing in the trees in the front yard of a home in the 1700 block of Stewart Avenue. When the shooting started, a family friend rushed to get him to safety, but that is when the bullet went through the man's hand and hit the boy in the stomach. (...)
Stray shots hit a man in his 20s and a 4-year-old boy who were both playing
Authorities say the 4-year-old was seriously injured after he was shot in his stomach.  The man, whose injuries are considered non-life-threatening, was shot in the hand.  The two victims were taken to area hospitals.
