17-year old Nashville boy shot in possible gang attack

A 17-year old Nashville, Tennessee boy, Jason Covington, was murdered in what might have been a gang shooting.  While watching an argument on the street, the shooter approached Jason, asked his name, then shot him dead before fleeing on foot.

Jason may have gotten involved with gangs around age 11 or 12.

From the article:

Covington, who was the father of a 1-year-old, left his mother’s house Monday night with a girl after a good day at home. It was the last time [his mother] Weems saw her son before the shooting.

Weems long tried to point Covington toward Christianity and the Bible. After a confrontation at home Sunday in which Covington refused his mother’s urging to open the Bible, he apparently read it for an extended period on his own on Monday.

His grandfather Jessie Weems also stopped by on Monday to talk to Covington.

“I told him he had to change his ways,” Jessie Weems said. “Whatever problems he had, he opened the Word Monday. He was starting to hear some of the things his mom was telling him.’’
