17-year old Longbeach boy shot by relative cleaning his gun

A 17-year old Longbeach, California boy was at home when a relative, apparently his father, was cleaning his gun.  The gun discharged, striking the boy in the stomach.  The boy is now in stable condition in the hospital.

From the article:
When offices arrived, a man told them he was inside the living room cleaning his gun when it discharged, hitting the 17-year-old boy.
....
The teen was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the stomach.

He is now listed in stable condition.

The man, who may be the teen's father, was detained and questioned by police, but he was not taken into custody.

Police said they do not plan to file charges.
From a related article:
[Police Spokeswoman] Massacani said the incident serves as a caution "that any time they’re handling a gun, to handle it with extreme caution. Whether it’s loaded or not, keep it pointed downward and away from any people to prevent accidents like this from occurring."
