4-year old boy shot when handling the gun of his father, a felon

Shawn Dean Sr. had stepped out of the house for a while.  When he returned, he discovered that his 4-year old son, Shawn Dean Jr., had found his loaded gun and accidentally shot himself in the face, dying from his wound.  Dean's 2-year old daughter was also home at the time, along with the children's mother, who was sleeping at the time of the shooting.

Shawn Dean Sr. is a felon, and attempted to hide the gun in a field before the police arrived.

From the article:
Dean was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and felon in possession of a firearm, Kelly said.
The boy was home with his sleeping mother and the girl when the shooting occurred, Kelly said.
The father was running an errand and returned home to find that his son had been shot, Kelly said.
The father hid the gun before police arrived, but police eventually found it in a field near the family’s home, Kelly said.
Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.
