From the article:
Police arrested the sixth-grade boy, 12, at 10 a.m. after another student reported to the office that he had seen the boy showing off a handgun and had seen at least two other students handling the gun, district spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said the gun was found in the boy's backpack and was not loaded.
....
“We are very troubled that a student brought a weapon onto the school campus. Thank god it was not loaded,” Gonzalez said. “This is a very serious matter and we hope that parents have conversations with their children about the danger of guns and about reporting incidents to a teacher or to a school administrator if they see anything unusual.”
Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.
